raw leather from the closest leather/shoe repair guy. The sturdy leather is called a vegetal leather( from standard cow skin), it's raw, you need to tint and oil it(i use mink oil). The soft leather is just classic mineral leather, the one they use for bags & stuff, thinner, already treated & tint (mainly cow skin again)
the stitches are done with waxed treads so they stick together one tied.
you only need very basic tool: leather needles, leather pick to pierce the holes before sewing and various punches to punch holes for the rivets, and of course a good anvil(oldschool shoemaker anvil is the best...but very hard to find)
